Chinese New Year Celebrations

Eskdale pupils have celebrated Chinese New Year by learning all about Chinese culture and tradition in various exciting ways. 2022 is the Chinese year of the tiger.

The Chinese New Year period is from Chinese New Year ’s Day (Feb 1, 2022) up to the 15th day of the Chinese New Year (Feb 15th 2022)

Food Tasting

Children learnt all about Chinese food and culture. They tried various Chinese food and even used chopsticks.

Making Dragons

Children made decorations in preparation for Chinese New Year.

Dragon Dance

We learnt a Dragon dance in the hall and performed it to some traditional Chinese music.

Chinese Lanterns

Children made lanterns. The lanterns were red (for good luck) with a tiger symbol.


Reception read the story of ‘It’s Chinese New Year’ and looked at how it is celebrated.


In Cantonese, the common way to say 'Happy Lunar New Year' is "Gong hei fat choy" (恭喜发财), which means 'Wishing you happiness and prosperity.'
