EARLY YEARS AT ESKDALE 

At Eskdale, we create a safe, secure and caring environment for our children where they will feel nurtured, confident and ready to learn.

 

We aim to provide exciting educational experiences for all children so that they are engaged in their learning, and have a range of opportunities in and out of the classroom.

 

We aim to provide the skills that children need in order to be ready for their next stage of learning, and prepare them for the future. At Eskdale, we have created a curriculum to help our children to develop in all ways, academically and socially.

CURRICULUM

The four themes from 'The Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage' form the basis of curriculum planning at Eskdale Academy.

 

These are:

  • A Unique Child

  • Positive Relationships

  • Enabling Environments

  • Learning and Developing

The characteristics of effective learning and the prime and specific areas of learning are all interconnected and move through all areas of learning and in all phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The characteristics of learning are:

  • Critical thinking

  • Playing and exploring

  • Active learning

The prime areas of learning are:

  • Communication and language

  • Personal, Social and Emotional development

  • Physical development

The specific areas of learning are: 

  • Numeracy

  • Literacy

  • Understanding of the World

  • Expressive Art and Design

ASSESSMENT

Assessment in the Early Years  is based on daily observations. Practitioners respond to children's needs and challenge children where possible, moving their learning on continually. Planning is then focused on children's next steps. Each child has an individual portfolio of evidence and is used to support the Development Matters/Early Years Foundation Stage Profile.

 

We involve parents in assessment wherever possible, through sending information home, and discussions with parents in order for them to contribute to their child's learning and assessment.

A two year development check is carried out on all children once they have settled into our 2 Year Old Provision.
